Someone asked me recently what my take on the destination wedding was. To be honest I didn’t really have one. Until recently. Studies show that more and more people are opting for this sunny beach get away and why? Well for starters you could save some cash! Did you hear me? Do I need to say that again? Imagine going from spending the average cost for a wedding here in Canada (between $30-$40,000) to $1,000-$4,000. Yeah, I will wait a minute for that to sink in.
Buckle up travellers; you’re in for a long one! Let’s dive into the pros and cons of this sandy destination idea.
Your wallet will thank you! I have said this, but I feel like it needs to be said a few times more. If you are like me, the idea of spending so much on a wedding is a little daunting. This is an affordable option. With basic to extravagant packages, you select what you like and how much you’d like to spend.
Less planning, less stress! There are a few ways you can go about planning this. Option One: hire a full service event coordinator that will work with everyone: the travel agent, the hotel, and all your vendors. Option Two: you find a really good travel agent who is accessible to all of your guests and have them book everyone. They connect you with the person at the hotel who will run your wedding and you finalize all the details with them. You can still enjoy the planning process, just on a much smaller scale.
Call me beach happy! There is no down side to being on a beautiful beach with all your closest friends and family for a vacation. Seriously, I’m struggling to think of one reason, and nope. I’m drawing blanks here. You can plan special outings or just leave it up to everyone to have a great time! Also you can combine the wedding and honeymoon in one shot - BONUS!
You go away on vacation, you come back and that’s it. You’re married. It is done. There is no lingering planning unless you want to add extra parties and events back home. The tough decision is picking where to go!
You’re wedding will be unique. A bunch of couples could get married at the exact same resort at the exact same time, but the pictures and experience that they take away from the trip will be different. You can customize things to exactly how you’d like it. Even with a ‘generic package’, let’s be real, it will still be different. Your day can be extended to a week or an annual vacation. That location could be the spot you travel to every year and can relive all the great memories!
Say bye bye to your guest list! Let’s face it, not everyone can afford a vacation. With flights and accommodations for a week depending on the time of year; you could easily be looking at a minimum $1,400 and up! Mentally prepare yourself for small numbers. Destination weddings rarely get a 100% attendance rate.
No site visits = no pre planning. Unless you make a special trip to the resort before your wedding or select a location you’ve been to several times prior; there will not be an opportunity for you to see the space you’ll be utilizing until the week you get there. At that point it may be too late to change things. This is where trust comes in. Most resorts do thousands of weddings and know what they are doing. Ask for pictures.
Party has to end sometime! On most resorts, loud noise and music has to subside by 10:00PM. Yes I know! Who ends a party at 10:00PM! Listen, if it were up to me I would be partying the entire week and sleep when I get back! However, a lot of people tend to sleep early and most resorts will enforce an early night. The solution? Most resorts have a ‘disco’. (For those too young to know what that is, it’s another name for a club) just pack up and continue the party there! It doesn’t need to end. Just have to move locations.
No gifts! This one sucks, if you are a couple who are just getting together and look forward to the gift part of the wedding. Now there are ways of making up for this. Before you leave you could host a party with friends as a ‘shower’ of sorts. If you are asking guests to pay for a flight and accommodations and any extra excursions you’d like to plan, it would not be nice to ask for a gift on top of that so don’t expect one.
There is a hefty amount of paperwork. Original birth certificates, passports, proof of citizenship and paperwork when you get back will all be involved. Yes the planning process is much easier, but where you don’t have to stress over table linens and menu selection, you have to make sure every detail of all the paperwork is needed so that at the end of the day you are legally married! Make sure you look into all details prior to getting on a plane.
So kiddies, pack your bags and get ready for quite the adventure! Get out there and start doing research, and start talking to people. Find the perfect travel agent for you or contact the ladies at Lady Luxe Events Co. to help you plan your perfect day abroad!
